The MZ2-S amplifier (aka MicroZOTL 2 “S”) is our refinement of David Berning’s original micro-ZOTL, adding a high-quality linear power supply that brings this amp’s performance to another level.

Hand-built by our small team just outside of Washington, DC, each board involves 12 hours of delicate work, including precise hand-winding of several proprietary components. This is far from populating a typical circuit board. After several days of testing, burning in, and re-testing, a case is prepared to an order’s specifications–another couple hours of labor–and the final product receives more playing time and is matched with a burned-in power supply.

While technically an OTL amplifier, the MZ2 is an entirely different kind of circuit that is able to achieve low output impedance and low-current operation, which translates to easy matching to almost any headphone or speaker and a long tube life.

A new feature of the MZ2-S is an on-board jumper that allows the user to switch between using 6SN7 and 12SN7 tubes.

The MZ2-S was designed in response to customer feedback and discussions about the amp. We wanted a “pre-rolled” tube amplifier that arrived with NOS tubes selected to match well with the circuit, so that the many people interested in tube rolling and old-stock tubes could get that experience without having to go through the uncertain and involved process of choosing and sourcing their own. The MZ2-S is our offering for a sub-$2000, end-game headphone amp, preamp, or low-power stereo amp that doesn’t ask for any upgrades.

Hand-built using quality premium components, the MZ2-S headphone amplifier and preamp delivers stunning, award-winning realism and sound quality designed to last a lifetime. The MZ2-S utilizes patented Zero hysteresis Output Transformer-Less (ZOTL) technology to eliminate the distortion and noise typically found in tube amplifiers. Performing at the theoretically correct turns ratio, a previously unheard of achievement, Linear Tube Audio’s MZ2-S delivers an unparalleled, stunningly realistic experience wherever it’s plugged in.

Originally manufactured from 2000 to 2007 by David Berning, the original microZOTL has a reputation as one of the finest and most realistic headphone amplifiers ever made. Linear Tube Audio’s reconfiguration of the original microZOTL amplifier lives up to its name and utilizes a highly refined, no feedback, Class A triode design with a separated, external power supply to further eliminate noise.

At 1-watt per channel output, the MZ2-S can easily drive even low-efficiency planar type headphones. For example, the MZ2-S drives the HIFIMAN HE1000 headphones with power to spare.

The MZ2-S (MicroZOTL 2 “S”) is also a superb preamplifier, with outputs that enable it to drive tube amplifiers as a Class A preamplifier.

The MZ2-S can even drive efficient speakers via its speaker outputs (89db or higher sensitivity) to moderate levels in offices, bedrooms and other small rooms. But it becomes a wonderful amplifier for those with high sensitivity horns (ca. 100db or more).
